Anita Ekberg

 

Kerstin Aita Marianne (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29/09/1931 until 11/01/2015) was an Swedish actress well-known for her stunning beauty and striking silhouette. Her fame was heightened by her iconic character as Sylvia in the Federico Fellini film La Dolce Vita (1960). Ekberg primarily worked in Italy which she later made her permanent residence in 1964. Anita Ekberg was the eighth child in a family of eight. Anita was a model during her teens. Ekberg was a participant in the Miss Malmo competition in 1950 following the advice of her mother. This resulted in her winning the Miss Sweden contest. Even though she spoke very little English, Ekberg went to America to compete for the Miss Universe 1951 title. This was an unofficial pageant at the time. The pageant was made officially recognized in 1952. Ekberg was not the Miss Universe winner, but she was among six semi-finalists. However, she did earn an endorsement from Universal Studios as a starlet. Ekberg was an Universal Starlet, where she was taught the art of elocution, drama and dance. She appeared in a few scenes in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) (playing a woman in Venus), Take Me to Town (1953), and The Golden Blade (1953).
